The magnificent Humpback Whales travel 3,000 miles from Alaska to Hawaii every Winter, essentially to birth, and mate. During the months of January, February and March, it is a rare day not to see Humpback whales, although December and April can also be great months to see the gentle giants too. We are so fortunate to have what we have nick-named a "Humpback Highway" right here, along the Kona coast.

The Humpback Whales are on the Endangered Species List, so it is not possible to get into the water to swim with a Humpback Whale. In fact, by law, we must stay 300 feet from all Humpback Whales. However, every season, we witness a fabulous range of Humpback activity; for example, tail-slapping, pectoral fin-slapping, heat-runs, mating, breaching, spy-hopping and more! Their acrobatics are phenomenal as we witness the 40 ton bodies flying through the air, twisting and turning and splashing back into the water on their sides.

The most common Humpback groupings that we have witnessed here are Mum and baby pairs, (often with an escort male); single males, (1-8); singers, (often stay underwater for 45 minutes); breathers, (can stay underwater for one hour); and escort males.
