This night-time dive/snorkel with the Manta Rays has been dubbed one of the top 10 dives anywhere in the world!!! Imagine being in the water…at night…and surrounded by anywhere from 1 to 30+ Manta Rays, as they dance their ballet around you!
Off the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, we are graced with the presence of close to 80 -- a good sized group -- of Mantas. They are well-known, documented, and all have names!
As these majestic ocean angels are free and wild, it is not possible to guarantee that the Manta Rays will be present on the night of your dive/snorkel. There has, however, been a percentage chance of around 90% based on swims/dives over a 5 year period. Normally, our dive lights held still, attract plankton which the rays come in to feed on.
The snorkelers hang still and quiet on the surface. With bubbles and beams of light below them is the underwater theater. They watch as huge Manta Rays do their ballet dance in front of the dive lights the scuba divers are pointing up. It is truly a different world below. The Manta Rays are also drawn up to the surface with the dive lights and do belly-to-belly somersaults.
